Economic Interdependence
JOINT STATEMENT
On the occasion of the forthcoming opening of negotiations on economic issues between the leaders of the two communities of Cyprus, we, the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce and the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry, encourage them to continue their efforts towards finding a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem.
We believe that a fair and lasting settlement will transform the island into an island of prosperity within the EU and make it an important business center in this region with access to all neighboring countries. This will have a positive impact for Turkish-Greek relations and contribute to the development of a positive political and economic environment in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Solution of this long-lasting problem will bring the people of Cyprus closer together and will increase the economic potential of the island as a whole. In addition, the positive synergies that will be created will increase Cyprus chances of countering the global economic crisis and transforming it into a window of opportunity.
It is an undeniable fact that both communities are bound to live together on the same island. We must learn from the bitter experiences of the past and establish our common future together. However, the further we delay the solution, the harder it will be to realize this goal. Therefore we urge both leaders to continue working together and reach an agreement as soon as possible.
We also call on all other actors and the international community to support the two leaders and to contribute to the process in a positive way.
The two Chambers believe that economic convergence and sustainable economic development are essential ingredients of a lasting solution and increased competitiveness of the island as a whole. Therefore we invite and encourage the business people of the two communities to establish and improve business links between them. The benefits of doing business together can prove a win-win situation for both communities.
As a manifestation of their close cooperation, the two Chambers have submitted a common project on Interdependence to UNDP-ACT. The aim of this project is to reinforce, foster and nurture the economic interdependence between the two communities.
This project has recently been approved by UNDP-ACT and, by signing it today, the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce are showing their commitment to work closely to make it a success.
